The only thing i could possibly recall as "cheap" or "affordable" back on NY would be cherries. Here in Mexico they are so expensive and hard to find! quite the opposite to most "tropical fruit" which becomes pricey overseas (like mangoes).
Sad thing for me, since i like cherries. I wish i had one of those 3kg for 3 dollars now...
